Here Comes the "Son"

After an uncharacteristically cool spell, things are decidedly brighter—not to mention cuter—at the San Diego Zoo's gorilla habitat! The baby boy gorilla was born to experienced mother Jessica early on December 26, and within a week Mom and infant were happily soaking up the sun in full view of delighted guests. The youngster, who has yet to be named, is Jessica's sixth baby (and sixth son!) and the offspring of Paul Donn. A proud mom, Jessica has been occasionally bringing her baby to a glass viewing area where visitors can observe as she spends time sleeping and nursing the youngster.

White "Lightening"

The white monacled cobra that slithered into the hearts of reptile lovers everywhere last fall now has a moniker worthy of her exploits. The venomous snake, which came to the San Diego Zoo after "running" free in Thousand Oaks, has been named Adhira, which means lightning in a Hindi dialect. Adhira beat out five other names in an online poll that garnered over 4,600 votes. Escapades aside, Adhira has received considerable attention for her leucism, a pigment condition responsible for her white coloring.
