fobes Seventeen years ago, Steve Fobes found himself at a crossroads. He was looking for a change of pace from the commercial architectural projects he was designing. Soon after, Mr. Fobes found an ad in the newspaper for an architect position at the San Diego Zoo and hastily applied. Since that time, Mr. Fobes has been designing bedrooms for bonobos instead of conference rooms for CEOs.

The Ideal Job: An Endangered Species?

The koalas at the Zoo are involved in the Species Survival Plan (SSP) to help sustain koala populations, as they face major habitat loss and danger from introduced species in Australia. Before breeding, the Zoo’s male koalas are are given an assortment of mates to choose from because it is unlikely he will choose the first or second mate. If that’s not picky enough, the koala’s diet consists of eucalyptus leaves and only eucalyptus leaves, which, let me tell you, are an expensive delicacy. Although these fuzzy marsupials occasionally walk on the ground, they spend most of their lives in trees. As if they could not be pickier, they are fonder of certain branches, those shaped like V’s, to support their gray, fuzzy rump as they lounge.

The Species Survival Plan: Safety for Koalas

Why do so many people visit the San Diego Zoo each year? Most guests visit for entertainment and to see exotic animals up close. Little do they know that it is also the Zoo’s job to “edu-tain” its guests, or to entertain through experiential education. A tiger roaring from six feet away or a baby panda climbing a tree provide spectacular inspiration for visitors. The Zoo also wants to help people become motivated to support conservation projects through their actions and support of the Zoo.

CamelsStephanie Burns is a testament to the fact that most Americans hold several jobs before finding their true calling. This Moorpark College graduate spent a few years at that junior college in Ventura County, California, working mostly with exotic animals at America’s Teaching Zoo. The former Zoo camp leader, television animal trainer, farm animal care provider, and now San Diego Zoo educator gave us an extensive tour of the World-Famous San Diego Zoo.
