Intern Kati’s Profile

katiprofileedited.JPGI come from a very odd family. I was created through a process called in vitro fertilization and surrogacy. My aunt gave birth to me (she was the surrogate) and my parents had to go to court so that my mother was listed on my birth certificate. As a result, my father now has a law practice centered on the infertility world. In addition, my mother is the owner and CEO of an ovum donation and surrogacy matching company.

So what does that have to do with the Zoo InternQuest? The conversation my family has around the dinner table is never the same but always returns to the family business in some way. I have learned so much from those conversations that I have become very interested in embryology and am considering it as a career, but I have known that I was going to work with animals since I was six years old and thought I could speak cat. I decided to apply for the Zoo InternQuest to see the different jobs available and what college majors I should consider. I have thought about many careers, all of them science-based, and hopefully will be able to narrow them down through this internship.

In my spare time I enjoy watching movies and lazing around on the family sailboat. I currently play softball and was a manager (a.k.a. water girl) on my high school football team for two years. Being a manager taught me many things such as serving compared to leading, and cooperating with a group of several other team managers and coaches. This year the coach asked me if I would be the head manager. I agreed. Little did I know that I was the only person he had asked to be a manager.

I will forever be grateful to all the parents, the wonderful players, and the coach who taught me how to work my hardest while serving and leading. With all of my knowledge of teamwork and science, I look forward to the next seven weeks as well as a future with CRES.

You may not see much of me on this site as I am on the Zoo InternQuest Photo Team, so I will be behind the camera.

Thanks, Kati, for introducing yourself. It sounds like you have had a very interesting life. With your background you understand the genetic world of breeding and the great successes the zoo has had with artificial insemination of many species. Your interest in embryology and genetics will help you in whatever career you pursue. Use your personal history to your maximum advantage in finding how you can make a difference in the world.

Enjoy the Zoo Intern program. The zoo and CRES are great places for you to pursue your interest in genetics and biology, and to see what potential career paths there are available to you.
