Intern Justin’s Profile

profile_justin.jpgConservation and animal behavior have been of interest to me since I can remember. I was brought up going to the San Diego Zoo with my aunt nearly every day. I would like to pursue a career in animal biology, preferably field biology. Field biology is the most attractive to me because it allows you to interact with animals in their natural environments. You are also given the opportunity to educate and work with the people native to the animals’ habitats. I am a volunteer at the San Diego Zoo in a program called Zoo Corps. Through this I have learned a lot of new information about not only what the Zoo does to help our natural world but also what I can do as well. My involvement with Zoo Corps was recently profiled in a national high school-level magazine. The issue was focused on kids and their dream jobs.

I am a junior in high school in San Diego and enjoy many extracurricular activities besides hanging out at the Zoo. My favorite sport is football. I played high school football as a freshman and may play again as a senior. I am a black belt in a Korean mixture of Jun Do Ru, Tae Kwon Do, and Hap Kido. I currently live with my older brother who works for a local TV station, and my elderly grandfather. I moved in last year to help take care of him as well as my grandmother.

I was drawn to Zoo InternQuest through Zoo Corps. I am interested in doing all I can to learn more about nature and to aid in conservation. I believe that the key to saving our natural resources as well as all of the endangered species is to begin with education. Through sharing stories and things people can do to help, people will realize the current situations and will find new ways of conserving wildlife and habitats while living comfortably. Through Zoo InternQuest I hope to learn more ways of being part of the ever-growing green movement. It makes sense for businesses and the environment for people to care about where things came from and where they go when you throw them away. But it is also about the animals for me. I would also like to be guided in the right direction for my future as a wildlife biologist. I am looking forward to getting to know all of the employees of the Zoological Society of San Diego – at the San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, and Conservation and Research for Endangered Species (CRES) - that we will meet and am very interested in all they have to say as well as any advice they have to offer.

I am on the Zoo InternQuest Careers Team.

Thanks for your introduction, Justin. Best wishes on your further education and your career. With your help, the SDZ can do a lot of education of the public and go a long way toward conserving wildlife and habitats allowing both humans and animals and plants to live comfortably together on the planet we all share and call home.

hi tori, i have taken bio, ap bio and am now in chemestry. the best way to find out about classes and ways of getting into such a career is by getting involved early. By this i mean find ways of helping out places such as the Zoo or any other wildlife/conservation based organizations. Also start small, begin with simply volunteer/intern opportunities. they are great ways of getting started and you meet a lot of people who can give you advice and help get you on the right track. Best of luck with everything. if you have anymore questions feel free to ask, i will check my blog at least once a week.

Hi everybody: FYI, there is a very informative discussion on this website that gives details about schooling, experience and other factors to consider if you are interested in zoo work. Click on the “Get Involved” icon @ the top of the page, and then click on Zoo Jobs. Lots of info in there. Good luck to all of you :).
