Pandas - Things Just Keep Getting Better

In 1996, two giant pandas, Bai Yun and Shi Shi, came to the San Diego Zoo on loan from China. When the pandas first came to the Zoo, very little was known about them. Several divisions from Conservation and Research for Endangered Species (CRES), veterinary services, and Zoo animal care teamed up to study as much about the pandas as they could.

The Wilds of the Wild Animal Park

giraffe.jpgEach morning the workday of the field keepers at the Wild Animal Park begins promptly at 6 a.m. with an all-staff meeting to organize the day. Food for the animals in each enclosure is determined by the nutritionists based on the needs of the animals, but it is  picked up by the keepers on the way out to the field.

ericbecht1.jpgDr. Allan Pessier, veterinary pathologist, knows he has an unusual job. He told us that people have asked him, “Why do you examine animals that have already died? Why don’t you just toss them out?” He explains that if you never know what killed an animal, then you can’t prevent that same thing from being the cause of death of others. Considering the fact that the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park house a lot of endangered species, it’s an important thing to keep them alive.

It Takes Heart to Work at Harter Veterinary Hospital

clinic.jpgDr. Julio Mercado gave us an exclusive tour of the Paul Harter Veterinary Medical Center at the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park. All the while he showed us around, he told us about his fascinating job. The facility is the most technologically advanced veterinary hospital in the world! We toured the large animal exam/surgery room that, if necessary, is equipped to support an animal as large as a rhino or elephant. The X-ray machines are mobile and completely digital so that the image contrasts can be adjusted without retaking the X ray.
