Zoo InternQuest is a career exploration program for high school students. For more information see the Zoo InternQuest Journals. For more photos see the Zoo InternQuest Photo Journal.

Hi, my name is Kevin. I’m a senior in high school in Coronado. I come from a large family with five brothers and sisters, so I’m no stranger to chaos. Despite the mass confusion at home, I have somehow developed a sense of organization and neatness, which at times gives me grief, since I have siblings that love nothing more than messing up my room. I’m a competitive gymnast, and have been for nearly four years. It’s an extremely difficult sport, and I’ve had to work very hard to overcome some of my fears, but it’s never boring and a lot of fun to learn new skills and be able to do things that very few people can do.

I’ve also always been very interested in animals, and ever since I was little, I have wanted to someday become a veterinarian. My favorite subject in school is science; I’ve taken four science classes in the past three years. My favorite classes were those involving animals, like marine biology and environmental science. In combining my academic interests with my love of animals, this career choice seems natural.

I learned about Zoo InternQuest at school and was immediately interested. It sounded like a great opportunity to meet lots of interesting people, and to learn about the many different fields of science. Not to mention fun! I have been assigned to the photography team, so I’m excited about getting up close to exotic animals to take their picture. I’m also really excited about talking with scientists in different fields of study, and learning all I can about the different careers that someone interested in animals and science can pursue.

I was pleasantly surprised to hear that we would also be working at the Wild Animal Park, because I’ve always enjoyed going there, and they have a lot of new facilities that deal with exotic animal medicine, and many other fields of science. We will also be working with the Conservation and Research for Endangered Species (CRES) center. I was really interested when I heard this, because I will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn about conservation science and how I can get involved. I can’t wait to see the new facilities and talk to the professionals that work there. One experience that I am really looking forward to is exploring the Field Exhibits at the Wild Animal Park and getting up close to the exotic animals that live there. It will be an amazing experience that I will remember for a long time. Every time I go to the Wild Animal Park, I want to get closer to the animals down in the exhibits, so I’m definitely excited about finally getting to do so.

I am very glad and grateful to be a part of this program. I can’t wait to get started!
