At the Wild Animal Park
Posted at 10:00 am October 30, 2007 by Public Relations- The San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park is open to the public! Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
- Read a blog and see video about the Park’s fire…
Of the over 3,500 animals that reside at the Park, two animals (a clapper rail and a kiang) were lost due to complications from the fire. More than 600 acres of Wild Animal Park property were burned. These were open buffer zone areas and not exhibit or public access space.
The California condors and other endangered bird species, as well as other animals that had been relocated to the Paul Harter Veterinary Medical Center’s fire-safe area, have been returned to their home habitats.
The animals remain safe, secure, and have weathered the firestorm well. The Wild Animal Park did lose one of the empty condor breeding facilities to the fire as well as a storage facility containing Festival of Lights event materials. Winds have damaged trees throughout the Park, but again the animals and exhibits have weathered the storm.

You can help! Many people are calling and writing in asking us how they can help the animals and staff that were affected by the recent fires. The following are two ways you can help:
1. Wild Animal Park Greening Fund: Situated in the San Pasqual Valley, the Wild Animal Park is no stranger to the threat of fires. Over the past years, we have actively worked to minimize these threats through our Greening Campaign. This campaign has enabled us to create hundreds of acres of nutrient-dense, eco-irrigated land that functioned as a safety blanket for our animals during the recent fires. Although we have converted much of the Wild Animal Park’s dry, arid, and fire-prone animal habitats into environmentally sustainable landscapes, the 1,800-acres Park needs further help. Your contribution today to our Greening Campaign will allow us to continue our greening efforts in our animal habitats at the Wild Animal Park.
To place your tax-deductible donation…
2. Catastrophic Leave Fund: During the recent fires over a dozen of our employees lost their homes. In order to support and aid these individuals during this time, we have implemented a Catastrophic Leave Fund. This fund will help them get back on their feet by helping them replace lost personal belongings and lost earnings. To support this fund, please send a check payable to “The Zoological Society of San Diego” to the following address:

Please note that contributions to the Catastrophic Leave Fund are not tax deductible.
Evacuations:
From Monday, October 22:
Certain critically endangered animals, such as the California condors, were evacuated to a safe zone in the middle of the night. Several of the Park’s other animals housed in threatened areas have also been evacuated, including education ambassador animals.
The Paul Harter Veterinary Medical Center has been chosen as the safe zone for the condors and animals not located in field enclosures. The area is free of brush and other fuels, is located near the highway, and is a state-of-the-art facility equipped with sprinkler systems and medical equipment.
A majority of the Wild Animal Park animal collection is housed in open, expansive 80 plus-acre field enclosures. These enclosures contain no dry brush or coastal sage. The grass growing in these areas is heavily irrigated. Chance of fire spreading into these habitats is highly unlikely; therefore, the hundreds of animals who live in these areas will be safest to remain in the enclosures during a fire.
Historically, the Wild Animal Park experienced a fire in October 1993. Several hundred acres of habitat surrounding the Wild Animal Park were destroyed, but the fire did not spread to the field enclosures and no animals were harmed. During the 1993 fire, none of the Park’s structures were impacted with the exception of the Wgasa Bush Line Railway track, which served as a firebreak. The parking lot was used as a staging area for fire fighting units and a command center was operated from the keeper training trailer.
Heavy smoke has reached the Wild Animal Park. However, according to animal care staff, the animals are alert but are not showing behaviors of concern. The animals seem to know when they are in immediate danger and when they are not. Brush has been cleared from around the Park. Fire hoses are laid out and ready for use if needed.

Thank you for posting this information. As I’ve kept watch over the area, I was concerned upon discovering the Wild Animal Park in the path of the fire. Thank you for your reassurance that the animals are okay.
October 22nd, 2007 at 3:48 pm
Aren’t you worried about the heat? It seems to me that even if the actual park does not burn that the animals can perish from surrounding heat.
October 22nd, 2007 at 3:50 pm
Thanks for the updates - I’ve been wondering about all the animals and how they would be moved if that became necessary. Will be thinking about everyone in Southern California tonight!
October 22nd, 2007 at 4:09 pm
Thank you for keeping everyone updated on the situation. I was worried about the animals when I saw the Park might have to be evacuated.
October 22nd, 2007 at 4:38 pm

I live in the UK and was at the zoo some four years ago and had a wonderful time. I found your website and wish you Luck and best wishes during this very worrying time. I hope it is over very soon and no danger befalls the staff or animals. I can see by your updates that you are doing a great job.

Thanks for taking the time to keep us updated. I feel for those helpless animals and those who take the risks to care for them. I know that the staff is doing everything they can to ensure that the animals are kept safe and healthy. I wish that I could do more than just worry. Such a beautiful facility, such beautiful animals. It is sad to see them threatened. Take care and know that our best thoughts and wishes go with you. Let us know if there is anything that can be done, now or in the aftermath.
October 22nd, 2007 at 4:59 pm
As always and as expected, your care for your animal charges is admirable. Thank you!
October 22nd, 2007 at 5:18 pm
Thank you so much for the updates. The news hasn’t mentioned anything about the park, and I was worried about the safety of the animals. I’m so glad that the people at the park and the zoo are so organized and well prepared.
October 22nd, 2007 at 5:20 pm
I also thank you for the update information. I remember that ‘93 fire and how well the park was defended. I so appreciate knowing how protective and proactive you all are in your care of all the animals. Take care of yourselves and know that you all are in my prayers. Blessed Be Love, Judy J

I know your capable staff will take care of the precious wildlife. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

The updates are truly appreciated! I am an avid webcam follower and feel like part of the San Diego Zoo family! Our entire family is concerned and prays for the safety and well-being of all the animals and staff. How difficult it must be for all of you! Again, if prayers and thoughts help at all, please know they are coming your way in full force!

Thanks for the update-how the fire’s affecting the park is of great concern to me and any information is important. You are high in my thoughts and prayers.
October 22nd, 2007 at 6:46 pm
I’ve been watching the news about the wildfires in both LA and San Diego Counties on MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News since yesterday morning here in Florida. Been really praying for the firefighters fighting these fires, the many thousands of people being impacted by this, and you guys—everyone at Wild Animal Park and SDZ. I’m glad that you finally wrote an update about your situation, and I know that you all will do everything that you can to ensure the safety and protection of all of the animals in both places. I was really worried about the elephants, especially the three babies, and the one pregnant elephant mom to be out there. Hope they will come thru this in very good shape. I’m also a little concerned about the pandas, especially Bai Yun and baby girl. I will continually pray for everyone involved in this effort, and that this situation will be resolved in a few days without any loss of lives, buildings, and animals. Keep up the great work! Will keep checking the website often for more updates from you all.
Chari Mercier
St. Pete, FL
PS: We’re experiencing some very warm weather down here, also. We were supposed to get some cool air down this way, but it looks like that front may not make it thru here this week. Florida does have its share of wildfires off and on around this state; so far, no fires right now despite the warm and dry conditions that we’re having now. Hope this front that’ll get stuck just north of my area does bring some rain; we need it!! You all need a lot of rain alot worse than we do, tho! Hope you all get a lot of rain this winter! That will really help the dry conditions and get the fire danger down quite a bit!
October 22nd, 2007 at 6:56 pm
Thank you for taking time to update us. For every post here, there are surely hundreds of people who have read your updates and have been comforted to know how you and your animal charges are doing during this disaster. Your hard work and dedication is appreciated by people all over the world. Take care and we all hope the worst is over for you. P. from L.A.

Thanks for the update and KEEP SAFE! We are visiting San Diego next month and have relatives in the area…and I can’t believe the images I see on TV and the internet. Our prayers are with everyone and all the beautiful animals at the zoo! I had initially read that the entire park was evacuated (what a job that would be!), so I take comfort in the fact that only the birds and others with safety issues had to be moved. Thanks also for the information about the irrigation in the Park. Best of luck to all!

I am very relieved to read your update. I have been following the “progress” of the fires all day and became worried in the afternoon when I read about an area very close to the park being threatened. I hope the animals know that they are safe and that the smoke and ash do not trigger any undue stress upon them. Take care, and good luck.
October 22nd, 2007 at 8:24 pm
I just visited the Wild Animal Park for the first time on October 17th. The day was beautiful, the park fantastic, and the animals wonderful. It was so peaceful at the park . I really enjoyed seeing all the animals — especially the various birds. Thank you for the update and the safety of the animals and the folks caring for them. Thank you for such a wonderful facility. Robin and Cahd Page, Mancos, CO

Thank You! Thank you for taking the time to post an update. I’ve been worried about the animals there at the park and it is a blessing to know that everything is under control. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the animals, as well as everyone else whose affected by the California fires.
October 22nd, 2007 at 8:49 pm
I have been glued to the TV all afternoon and evening watching the latest news about the Southern California fires. San Diego county is one that has been hit hard with many houses burned and 1/4 million people being evacuated. As an animal lover, my heart goes out for all the animals especially the ones at the SD Zoo and Wild Animal Park. I hope the situation will improve soon…thanks so much for giving us this update and for all your hard work in keeping our precious animals safe and secure.
October 22nd, 2007 at 8:52 pm
Watching the fires on television, I was worried about the Wild Animal Park. I’m glad to see that they’re not in any immediate danger and are safe. Thank you for keeping the public updated with this information.
October 22nd, 2007 at 9:01 pm
Thank you so much for the updates. I’ve been thinking and wondering about the wonderful animals at the Wild Animal Park all day, especially our favorites, the pregnant lionesses and Izu’s whole pride. I’m glad to hear that they are doing fine. I also hope that the fires are not threatening any of the homes of the zoo employees. You all do such good and important work taking care of these amazing animals!
October 22nd, 2007 at 9:02 pm
Thank you for taking the time to update this site. I moved out of state this past spring and have greatly missed spending my days off at your wonderful park. I’m keeping your staff and all the animals, especially my favorite baby elephants, in my thoughts. Good Luck and keep safe!
October 22nd, 2007 at 9:04 pm
Thank you for keeping us posted. As I write this I have just found out about aviculturist friends in Fallbrook that have been evacuated and living in New England it is hard to imagine what you all must be going through. I had the privilege to visit the Park for the first time in August after the AFA convention. My thoughts and prayers are with the animals and you all especially Mike Mace and all the staff that was so generous with their time when we visited. I hope your families and homes are safe as well.
October 22nd, 2007 at 9:35 pm
Thank you for letting us know about the staff and animals. I was worried to hear that animals were being evacuated but your information makes me feel a little better about the situation. Hope everyone’s families are out of harms way and the situation gest under control in short order.

Thank You for keeping the public updated. I was very concerned about the animals. Please stay safe. If you need some volunteers you can email me.
October 22nd, 2007 at 10:39 pm
Thank you for keeping us updated about the animals…you have such a lovely home for them and we will continue to monitor your updates. Thank you for all you do for these wonderful creatures from foreign lands.
October 22nd, 2007 at 10:59 pm
While our prayers are for all our zoo animals, keep in mind all the wild animals that don’t live in a zoo that are trapped in these horrible fires. They don’t have the loving staff and facilities to help protect them. Say a prayer for them also please.
October 22nd, 2007 at 11:06 pm
Thank You for the Updates ive ben checking regularly, thank you for doing everything to ensure all the animals are safe. Good Luck and I’ll be praying for teh animals, the care takers, the volunteers, and everyone doing their best..
October 22nd, 2007 at 11:49 pm
Thank you so much for the updates! We have been heartsick about the Wild Animal Park animals and staff and due to the number of fires, there has been little information about the Park. My family’s thoughts and prayers are with the families and staff of the dedicated Wild Animal Park–please continue to update us on the status and if there are any unmet needs that we can possibly aid with. Sincerely, Carol from North Dakota (proud member of the ZSSD!)
October 23rd, 2007 at 1:11 am
Our prayers and thoughts are with you. May all affected by this disaster be comforted and kept safe and well! God bless.
October 23rd, 2007 at 2:18 am
Thanks for the updates, they are very much appreciated. It’s amazing how quickly the weather can turn from idyllic to catastrophic. It is very reasurring to know that the animals are in good hands and the danger is subsiding. Please keep us posted on any developments.
Thanks and stay safe!
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:45 am
Thank you for the information! I have been so worried about what will happen to the animals. A friend told me ranch horses go to parks at he coastal area in SD, but I knew this cannot be a place for wild animals and it is too small. Take care!!

Please keep the animals safe and yourselves safe. Thank you for letting all of us know what is going on at the Wild Animal Park. We love all the animals and hope everything is ok. Good luck. Stay safe.
October 23rd, 2007 at 5:10 am
We are very relieved to here all is well. Our 4 year old son was very concerned about the park and the zoo. We were out for a visit a few months ago. Your facility, staff and people of So. California are very much in our thoughts and prayers. Stay safe!!
October 23rd, 2007 at 5:50 am
Thank you for the information about the fires in the area of the park. Having gone through the “bugaboo fire” in north Florida this past year, I know how frightening it is. I am so glad that the park seems to be out of harms way. I pray that you (the staff) and the animals will remain safe. I also pray that none of the staff will lose personal property.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:04 am
Living here in Southern California we are used to fires but it is the loss of life that matters the most. It is devastating to lose your home but we are thankful that there has been only one death so far. The Park was one of my first thoughts as I know its location makes it vulnerable to fires and San Diego seems to be worse than most areas right now.
I am glad to see that the staff at the park and the zoo are ready for evacuation if needed and have taken steps to protect the most endangered animals. Of course we can’t forget the thousands of animals all over Southern California who are dying right now from the fires or running for their lives. We can only pray that the wind dies down and the firefighters are able to get a handle on all these fires, saving homes, people and the wildlife.
It smells like a fireplace outside and it will get worse I’m sure. The health hazards here of such fires is something few think of until months later we end up sick or at the doctor’s due to inhaling these things. It is good to know that people all over are concerned about us and about our wildlife in and out of the zoos.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:10 am
Thank you so much for posting the updates regarding the parks condition. My aunt called me yesterday to inform me about the fires in the south. My cousin lives in San Diego and has been displaced due to the fires. My heart goes out to you all, be safe.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:58 am
Thanks for the updates. I was at the zoo last week and I was shocked to hear that the animal park was in the fires path. I hope everything settles down today. Lets hope for the best. Be safe out there everyone.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:35 am
Thanks for the update on the animals. My husband and I visited the animal park on Sunday when the fires were just starting. The trainers were commenting on the behavior of the animals. The giraffs and other animals were running in herds as if they were spooked by something. It was very majestic to see these beautiful animals in stride. It wasn’t until the afternoon as we left the park that we saw the plumes of smoke. We were staying in a hotel in Rancho Bernardo near 115 where the fire crossed the freeway. As we were evacuated at 5:30 in the morning we could not stop thinking about the animals and their plight. Thanks for calming our fears.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:59 am
My first thought from here in Vermont was of the animals and staff at the park. I knew you would have something on your website. Thank you for posting - as you can see, you are well-loved and prayed for!
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:27 am
Thank you for posting updates. While human lives and the houses lost are of the utmost importance, it is reassuring to know all the precautions & safeguards that are taken to protect all of those beautiful animals.
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:47 am
I live thousands of miles from the San Diego Zoo, but my thoughts are with all the furry, slimy, woolly, and flying residents there !! (and the courageous people that take care of them all). Your zoo is a national treasure and MUST be saved
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:54 am
Thank you so much for posting updates. So many of us who have visited the park are thinking of the animals and the heroes who are taking care of them. Our prayers are with you.
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:56 am
Thank you for the update! Prayers and only good thoughts going out to everyone there! May angels protect everyone, both two and four legged!! Please be safe!
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:02 am
Oh my, I am SO concerned for the safety of all the zoo staff and those precious animals! I will never be able to visit in person, but I have spent many many hours watching your web cams, reading your posted info on various animals, and listening to zoo keepers telling about new babies and the progress of all animals. You and the animals are constantly in my prayers. Thanks for letting us know what is being done for the safety of all! God bless!
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:25 am
Thank you for your updates. My husband & I took our son to San Diego on vacation in July and we went to the Animal Park and the Zoo. We would visit the webcams frequently to see the elephants and see how pretty San Diego is. Unfortunately, all you can see now is smoke. My prayers are with you and with all of the people who are working these fires.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:35 am
I pray your zoo will be safe and unharmed from the fires. I watch the Panda’s and Polar Bears alot. I want to visit your zoo someday. I pray that all the firefighters and zoo personal will be safe. God Bless to you all. Debra Shuman Pinellas Park, Florida.

October 23rd, 2007 at 10:08 am
Thank you for the updates on the website. I am keeping all of you and your animals in my prayers. My partner and I were at the park last year and took the caravan tour and fed the Giraffes and Rhino’s. It will be one of the most memorable and cherished events in our lives. Thank you all for all you do for these animals. Again, we are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers as you risk yourselves for the sake of your animals.
October 23rd, 2007 at 10:21 am
Thankyou for giving us these updates! I was at the Park about 1993 and got to see how close a previous fire had come to this park or the Zoo. Way too close! I was volunteering at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower center then. I showed my book to Flo, one of the Employees of the center. The book showed how the fire had restored many wildflowers around your facility! She was impressed and called the park to exchange books with you, as this was right up their Alley!
I am enjoying the videos of the animals, and hope to get back there next spring! Maybe we can exchange books again! Pat Gray

Thanks for leaving info on your site. As soon as I heard about the fire, I immediately was worried about the Wildlife Park there, as I have spent many great hours there when I travel to the area. I will keep positive thoughts for you all there. Thanks for keeping the animals safe. Lynne from the central Oregon coast.

I was at the park on Saturday, and missed my chance to visit my favorite Burrow Owls. I have been very concerned about them, the condors, the Northern White Rhinos, and all the animals at the park.
Thank you so much for the updates; the Wild Animal Park is a big part of our community, and our concerns of course extend out to the park, employees, animals, and facilities. Knowing what’s going on there in lieu of any news coverage is really great.
Here in Clairemont, we’re still at home, calm, patient, hoping, waiting…

Thank you for posting the updates about the animals during such critical time. I have been thinking about the animals all night. Thank you for your unselfish work and care. We humans have common languages to convey our needs and transportation means to escape. The animals need us and you. You and the animals will be in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you again. Please keep us posted.

To the staff: Take extreme care. I hope you and your families remain safe.
Keep the animals safe, keep them healthy. I have the utmost faith that your efforts will save numerous lives, animal and human.
October 23rd, 2007 at 12:36 pm
My thoughts and prayers have been with you all–not just the animals (including my beloved pandas!), but all of you wonderful people who take care of them, who assembled the Frozen Zoo, etc. Know that many people on the East Coast are hoping for you and concerned about you.
October 23rd, 2007 at 12:44 pm
Thank you staff, for thinking of us who are fretting about your safety and the safety of our beloved animals. I am saying a prayer that Santa Ana winds will stop and rain will come SOON. Stay brave and watchful, take no risks and know that our prayers are with YOU ALL.
October 23rd, 2007 at 12:45 pm
Great to know you’re doing alright amongst the blazes. Our family was at the park on opening day many years ago. Our hopes and prayers are with you all!
October 23rd, 2007 at 12:51 pm
Hello,
Is there a link where supporters can make a cash donation to help with recovery from the fires? I can’t afford to buy a membership, don’t live anywhere near the parks, but want to help anyway.
Thanks
Moderator’s note: Thank you, John. That’s a good idea!

Thank you so much for all you are doing to help these animals. We recognize the personal risks you are taking and the horrible stress you are enduring. Please know that our family is thinking of you and praying for you, your families, your homes and of couse these beautiful creatures. Mark, Jane, Nathan, Abby, Brent and Elise

Hi, you all! Read your latest update this morning and found out that Wild Animal Park did suffer some fire damage in some areas. It looks like the damage is not very widespread from what I gathered from the statement, and that the large animals in the range areas are still doing ok so far. I also just found out on CNN that LA County has reported a death of a man from burn injuries suffered from the wildfires. That’s sad to hear, but the good news is that there has not been a huge casualty list from these wildfires. I did read some of the comments from the people that are very concerned about the wildlife that live out in those mountains, valleys, and canyons, and I am very worried about those animals out there that are having to run for their lives from these fires. I sure do hope that there are no wild animal deaths from this incident in all of the counties that are affected. Will keep checking this website for new updates from you as you keep vigil on the situation out there. I did hear the weather report on weather channel and CNN that these Santa Ana winds should start winding down in the next day or two. Sure do hope so!!
Was also on pandacam today, and watched Bai Yun and baby girl snug in their den—Baby girl sleeping, Bai eating her lunch. At least they are safe for now, but SDZ staff are continually staying vigilant just in case they need to take action for the safety of all of the animals there. Gotta go and do some things, check the cams, and keep on praying for all of you and the animals. Also, heard that Sea World San Diego has shut down at least for today and will make a decision about whether to open up the park tomorrow or not. So far, all of the marine and land animals there are safe and ok. Will be checking on that website often for any updates there. I know that Sea World is a great facility because we have Sea World here in Orlando, Florida. Fantastic place to visit for a couple of days! Please stay safe, and try your best to stay out of the bad, smokey air that’s been caused by the wildfires. Just heard that the air quality in all of the affected fire areas are at a CODE RED. I know about bad smokey air; Pinellas County just went thru the same thing from the wirldfires earlier this year, and it was very eerie and wierd. Don’t want to go thru that again!
Love and prays to all of you and the animals,

National news coverage should include updated information to ease concern of those across the country who care about the animals and their home…they don’t have the human’s chance to evacuate. Those water drops must help your heroic efforts. The authorities will hear an outcry ‘Katrina style’ if they fail to save your irreplaceable treasures -all the species-endangered or not! Is there any site with a map showing the inferno’s location neat you. Thanks for taking time to share info with all who care so much.
Bless the beasts and the staff.

Dear staff - thanks for the update - we had the opportunity to visit the WAP last year - what a wonderful place. I can’t begin to imagine trying to cope with such horrific fires all around. Our thoughts & prayers are with you all as you try to keep the animals safe. Take care.

Extreme kudos to the folks keeping the news updates going for the Wild Animal Park!
When I first learned of the fires, and the proximity of one to the Park, I was horrified at the thought of what might happen. The only mention of the SDWAPark in the news here were 2 lines about the full evacuation of personnel and a few sensitive animals. Without more information, I envisioned the possibility of a frantic effort to evacuate and save as many animals as possible in a very short time frame. I was just about to book a flight down to offer my 2 arms and legs’ service when I saw the update on this site.
Posting the historical information about the 1993 fire gave excellent contrast and some degree of The story also offered a peek into some of the design decisions and disaster planning that we are seldom aware of but certainly exist. If only more people planned as far ahead–or utilized communication–half as well as you folks do…
We will keep checking for news and info on how the rest of us can help in the coming days and months. Thank you again for the news updates!
October 23rd, 2007 at 1:54 pm
Thank you for the continued updates. And Thank you for the wonderful work you are doing to help ensure the safety of the animals at the zoo. I work with one of the agencies that is helping with the fires and I am able to monitor the ongoing situation down there. Be assured that every thing possible is being done to put out these fires. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone. Be safe and be strong! I watch my beloved Pandas on Panda cam daily and can see that so far they are doing well, that is due to the supportive and caring staff at the zoo.
October 23rd, 2007 at 2:16 pm
My prayers are with all of you, with all the people in California who are battling the fire, especially you who are taking care of the animals.
Thank you for posting this information on the website…I’ve been thinking of the zoo ever since the fires hit San Diego. God Bless.
October 23rd, 2007 at 2:40 pm
Thank you so much for posting the information on the fire. I have been terribly worried about the animals ever since hearing of the fires in San Diego. I am a huge animal lover and it calms me to know that the animals are not in danger and are being well cared for during this time of crisis. Thank you for being such caring people and loving animals as much as we do.
October 23rd, 2007 at 2:47 pm
Thank you for your information about fire.
I’m very worry about that.
I do hope and pray all animals and all staff and their family are safe.
October 23rd, 2007 at 2:55 pm
I am relieved that the animals are all okay. Thanks so much for the detailed updates and for taking such great care of the animals, especially in times of danger.
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:13 pm
Thank you for the update on your website and taking all the precautions for the safety of the park and the animals. Take care and stay safe.
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:36 pm
Thank you so much for the updates on your website. I love your park and have been there many times. I will pray for your and your animals safety during this awful disaster.
October 23rd, 2007 at 5:28 pm
Thank you so for the updates. I was watching the news, concerned about the animal park. We brought our grandaughter last year for the roar and snoar, loved it. Happy to hear the staff and the animals are all alright. We will be thinking of all of you. BE SAFE

Thank you to the Wild Animal Park & Zoo Staff for posting information! We have become so attached to the Zoo and Wild Animal Park and every year when we visit we have been more impressed by the improvements, the care, the dedication of the staff across the board, and the integrity of the organization that is The San Diego Zoological Society. When I heard the fires were happening and heading towards Escondido I tried to find out on some news sites how it was and then thought, well, maybe the WAP site has something and YAY you did!
We knew the animals were in good care already, but I have been most impressed with your foresight, and you understanding of how much this information means to many people who love and support animals. I am sure your keepers, vets, and everyone else on staff is going above and beyond the line of duty and please let them all know how impressed everyone is!
I was also very impressed at the tone of the messages to your employees. This is clearly a very caring and understanding organization and I am proud to be a member! It makes sense for us because we come to SD every year but I love the idea of a special fund to help rebuild and make the protection even better.
Stay safe and strong - there are prayers for you from Phoenix!
take good care,
~Sheryl & Matthew

Thank you so much for keeping us informed about what is happening. I live in Florida but we are intensely interested in the well being of animals everywhere. Keep up the good work.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:29 pm
My family has visited your park and the kids had a wonderful time. They are very concerned about the animals and I am pleased to see you provide updates. We will pray for our friends in California that this nightmare will end soon and everyone will be safe.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:37 pm
Once again, thanks for your latest update along with pictures to help relieve our worries that the smoke does not seem to be affecting your/our beloved animals. Also appreciated the info on how to help with donations. We are all praying for break in the weather. To those of your staff that may have lost their homes or had to evacuate, our prayers are with you all. Stay safe. Regards, Maureen

One more night and maybe the worst is over. All this recalls the Oakland Hills fire in the 90s; I drove from SF where I was raised to Sacramento, passing through Berkeley, stopping at a familiar gas station on Ashby. The entire eastern horizon of hills was alight, in areas with homes. A fellow about my age was there asking to clean windshields, I recall, and we fell into a conversation about the fire and how small our lives seemed on that day. This image I transposed onto the area East of Escondido, and all my thoughts have been with the Wild Animal Park, the small farms and ranches, and the people with their lives sunk in these homes. All power to them, but I might rather see my own house burn than hear that the W.A.P. was leveled. I plan to visit as soon as the fires die and I can get some time off work. Nothing can cheer shocked people up like the human touch. For everyone in San Diego County, shared grief is reduced, don’t sit alone downtown, volunteer somewhere: this is a rare moment when we are not measured by what we own but what we do.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:06 pm
I had the privilege of spending my childhood in San Diego and approximately 8 years living in Rancho Bernardo very close to the park. I will never forget the beauty of the park and the wonder of the exhibits and how close visitors were able to get to the animals themselves. I really appreciate the fact that many employees of the park stayed in the park to care for the animals despite the danger the fires posed and the obviously bad air quality. Thanks to all the employees for your dedication to the animals and the park!
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:21 pm
Thank you so much for keeping us informed on the web site. Since we live in Utah, it is difficult only getting news blurbs that always shows the worst of the fire. We are so relieved to hear that the animals are same and how plans are so complete for their protection. We also pray for all the employees and families as we pray for California in general. We love the park and the zoo so much they are my favorite places to visit.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:30 pm
Thank you for your updates and for providing information about helping the park regain its habitats. It is little enough to be able to help the park after all the years of enjoyment I have had visiting. We get to know many of these animals, not as well as you do of course, and we love them too and we know how important the work you do there is. I am glad that everyone is safe and hope it remains that way.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:49 pm
I’ve been watching the live cams daily since Su-Lin was born, and hearing of the fires I became very worried for those beloved animals we all enjoy watching! I was relieved to check the site several times today and read the updates. Everyone here sends prayers that everyone & every animal will escape the inferno! Being so far away all I can do is sit here watching for updates and feel so helpless. But I see you need donations to continue the greening campaign and so, that is something I can do to help. Thank you all for thinking of US by keeping us updated when you have so many other immediate concerns to attend to.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:53 pm
After reading that people are being safely evacuated, my concern immediately turned to the animals at your zoo. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment on their safety, and to re-assure the public.
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:10 pm
Thank you!!! Thank you for the updates on the zoo. I’m wondering where Bai Yun is… her baby has GOT to be hungry. Baby is SO beautiful by the way!!!
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:57 pm
THANK YOU for the updates on the website. The Wild Animal Park is a place very dear to my heart. I’m glad to hear that all are ok.
October 23rd, 2007 at 10:04 pm
Glad to see all is well down there! Another great example of how zoo’s adopting technology, can really keep the general public in the know.
October 24th, 2007 at 12:37 am
We love God’s creatures and hope to visit San Diego next summer, with a trip to you, of course! We are praying for all the staff and animals. Wish we could send some Oregon rain your way.
October 24th, 2007 at 3:49 am
Thanks to everyone at WAP and SDZ for doing such a great job every day of the year but especially now! Hope the rhinos are ok. Feeding them last year while taking the Photo Caravan Safari Tour was such an impressive experience! All the best and stay save! Our thoughts are with you!!
October 24th, 2007 at 5:37 am
We are so happy to hear that the animals are doing well. While we are concerned for the area, human loss, and stress on everyone, sometimes we forget about the animals. We have been planning a vacation to San Diego since early March and hoping to still come in early November when we have our reservations. My 2 and 4 year old have been looking forward to this vacation to see all the animals. We are praying for rain, safety of all, including the animals, and quickness in controlling the fires. Stay safe and keep us updated!
October 24th, 2007 at 7:13 am
My thoughts and prayers are with you all! I cannot think about the wild animals caught in the fires without weeping for them. Take care and thank you for keeping us updated. I hope God’s care and love for all of you will keep you safe.

How thoughtful of you in posting this detailed information for people who care about the animals and staff. Am sure that sharing this information about the status of the zoo have assuaged many a child’s real worry - as well as ours!
Your stellar handling of this terribly critical situation reflects the fine care you give the animals.
Thank you, Ann Kelk, NC
October 24th, 2007 at 8:09 am
Very much appreciate the time taken to update this site, considering all you have to do elsewhere. I saw on CNN a report of how close the fire was to the Wild Animal Park. They even showed a white egret that was huddled on the ground with smoke/soot almost obscuring the bird. They reported some animals had been evacuated but they had to leave some behind. Made it sound like the facility was going to be overrun and they grabbed what they could and left the rest to fend for themselves. Glad that was not the case!
October 24th, 2007 at 9:05 am
Please continue to take care of yourselves and all the creatures and know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.
October 24th, 2007 at 9:50 am
As a former resident of Escondido ((I was there for the ‘03 fires) I immediately thought of you when I heard about the path of the fire. I gratefull to hear that while you might have had some property damage, your animals and staff are currently in no imminent danger. Kudos to you for taking the steps years ago to make sure the WAP was ready for this! My heart goes out to your staff - I know that some of you will be directly impacted by these fires. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.
October 24th, 2007 at 9:52 am
What do they mean by “most” of the animals are safe? Did some perish!?!
Moderator’s note: Of the over 3,500 animals that reside at the Park, two animals (a clapper rail and a kiang) were lost due to complications from the fire.
October 24th, 2007 at 10:18 am
Thanks so much for the updates. I click in on the webcam at least once a day just to check on everyone. I was so concerned about you and the animals, checking maps just to see how close fires were. I live too far away to visit, so the Internet helps keep in touch. God be with you all.
October 24th, 2007 at 10:34 am
I love visiting your city from my home here in N.J., and my favorite attractions are the Park and the Zoo. I am so thankful to learn that the animals are safe and being handled with tender, loving care. But I feel horrible for the people in your area. You are all in my prayers.
October 24th, 2007 at 10:52 am
Thank you for the update on the wild fires - I have been worried about all animals and staff at the zoo. As a regular viewer of Panda Cam, I’m delighted to see the Pandas are still relaxing and clearly enjoying themselves! My thoughts are with you at this worrying time.
October 24th, 2007 at 11:18 am
Thank you for taking the time to keep us updated, and great news that the Park and the animals are out of danger! I’m in Orange County and it’s been a very upsetting week in this area, but the animals and the Park have never been far from my thoughts.
October 24th, 2007 at 11:55 am
This is a wonderful, wonderful organization. I applaud every single person on that staff who did everything they could to ensure the safety of the animals… So sad to hear about the lapper rail and the kiang, but based on the circumstances, it could’ve been far worse.
Great people and a special place to visit!
October 24th, 2007 at 12:11 pm
I am so sorry that you lost the Rail and the Kiang. This is a horrible way for them to die. I just hope that no more succumb to the smoke and pollution of this unbelievable fire. Do you think it is beyond you now? That you (and our wonderful animals) are safe?

I am so relieved that the Wild Animal Park has come through this horrible firestorm as well as it did. I was very sorry to hear about the rail and the kiang, though. I’ve been checking this site several times every day because of my worries for your safety and that of the animals. I think the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park is a national treasure. God bless you all as you recover from this terrible fire.
October 24th, 2007 at 4:08 pm
I am so sorry about the animals. I was raised in San Diego, and have enjoyed many visits to both parks. I was beyond destroyed when I remembered that San Pasqual was in the path of destruction. It’s great that the animals are safe, as well as our treasured California Condors. My thoughts and hopes are that you all make it through this tough time.
October 24th, 2007 at 4:19 pm
My condolences on the loss of your bird and the kiang. Hoofstock can be very charming and rails so beautiful and rare and I am sure the animals’ keepers are griefstruck even by just those two losses. Kudos to your staff for a good emergency plan. I recall that the Audubon Institute had few losses because of a similarly excellent emergency plan. I wish governments were run as well as zoos.
October 24th, 2007 at 5:04 pm
What wonderful news! I thank all of the workers who stayed with the animals and to protect the park. They deserve so much more than a thank you. Their dedication and hard work went beyond duty, it came from the heart.
And I know that all of us appreciate your thoughtfulness in keeping this web sight up-to-date!

Thank you very much the your love………..and taking time to let the rest of the world know how the Park is doing
October 24th, 2007 at 5:55 pm
Thank you for keeping us updated on what is happening at the WAP during the fires. I’m relieved that most of them and the staff have come through this and I cry for the loss of the two animal lives. Hopefully that is all that will perish. I worry about the animals at the zoo as well as Sea World and I’m grateful that the zoo and WAP keep us updated. I wish Sea World would do the same instead of just saying they’re closed.
I will continue to keep good thoughts for you and the animlas.
October 24th, 2007 at 5:58 pm
Hi, you all! First of all, my condolences in the losses of the clapper rail and the kiang. You didn’t specify what caused their deaths, but I’m sure that the fire and smoke conditions were not helping at all! Hope you have more clapper rails at your facility, and hopefully, a new chick will be born later on to replace the one that was lost. Didn’t get a pic of adult clapper rails on this page, so I don’t really know what they looke like. Was this the clapper rail chick that was born this year that died? You didn’t say. I’m pretty sure that you have a good strong herd of kiangs and that this will lessen the loss. I’m glad that you are trying to get reopened for tomorrow, Oct. 25, and I hope that the smoke has pretty much cleared out of the area. The 2 pics of the park with the smoke around the area was really surreal looking. Couldn’t make out the giraffes or the gazelles because of the smoke very well. But, it did show what you all were up against over the last few days. The bad news on this is that the Witch and Poomacha fires have merged earlier today, and it’s only 10% contained at this point. With the Santa Ana winds starting to die down, the firefighters will finally get their chance to get in there and get this fire further contained and eventually out. But, I agree with Governor Schwarzenneger—I don’t trust the weather forecast either, because these Santa Ana winds could kick back up in a few days, and the onshore winds could get up there and push the fires in totally different directions! So, please be careful, stay safe, and make sure the animals are staying safe. You all did a yeoman’s job making sure that the Wild Animal Park survived this fire, and that all of the animals were in safe areas at all times. Hope you will get the elephantcam back up online, too! Would like to see the 3 baby elephants again! Hope they weren’t too stressed out after going thru this. Keep us updated on anything that happens with you and the park as much as you can. Let’s just hope and pray that all of the fires in all 7 counties will be thoroughly contained and put out as soon as possible, and that good weather and lite winds will be a big help for the firefighters getting these fires out. Now, I’m gonna get on the pandacam and check out Bai Yun and baby girl. It’s a huge relief for me that SDZ was not as impacted from these fires this time around. I know the smoke was pretty bad there, tho. Hope that clears out in the next 24 hours! Stay safe, you all!

So sorry to read about your loss- many thanks to all the staff that worked so hard to keep the park safe. It sounds like to winds are easing up some - with some many thousands evacuated it will be months before things get near normal so we have the animals to comfort us.
October 24th, 2007 at 7:31 pm
Thanks for your update! We are members of the San Diego Zoo/Wild Animal Park and the animals are like pets to us as we go every week and practically know them. We are happy to know that they are safe and we commend the staff who actively ensure the safety of these animals. Thank you.
October 24th, 2007 at 7:44 pm
so sorry about the 2 that died. at least the rest of the animals are ok - would have been terrible! we’ll see you this weekend
October 24th, 2007 at 9:37 pm
I hope all the animals and staff are safe. Please keep yourselves and your anmials safe. My condolences on the loss of your bird and the kiang.
October 25th, 2007 at 1:49 am
To see where the fires are go to Google then Maps. Click on the link on the top left that says “California Wildfires.” Set your map for the hybrid view and center the map over San Diego. The SDZ is located just above the word “Diego,” north of El Prado between Cabrillo FWY and Park Blvd. If you are curious as to just where the pandas reside keep zooming in until you see three bluish rectangles. If they were marks on the face of an analog clock the one at ten o’clock marks the spot. The outdoor exhibit areas are perpendicular to the southwest side of the building. To find the Wild Animal Park center the map on Escondido about 35 miles north. Then zoom in until you see a road named “San Pasqual” to the east. Now zoom in further until going east along San Pasqual until you see Zoo Road. This map is being updated frequently and there is much information available right there. I hope no one minds that I posted this both here and on the panda blog. I thought more people would see it it this way. Still praying!

Our condolences on the loss of the rail and kiang. It is always painful to lose a furry or feathered friend that you have cared for. They may only be two of hundreds, but I am sure they were “special” to someone.
Kudos to the staff for a job well done in keeping the park safe for the remainder of the critters.
October 25th, 2007 at 7:22 am
I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of the two precious lives. Was anyone with them when they died or were they found after the fact. My heart goes out to those who cared for them. Glad to hear there’s finally been a break in the winds and fire fighters are getting a small handle on the fires. I hope you can open today and start getting back to normal. And Thank God the damage wasn’t worse.
October 25th, 2007 at 7:37 am
Please let us know, is the danger to the parks over now. Where you able to open the parks again today, Oct. 25?
October 25th, 2007 at 8:14 am
Please take your time and be cautious about opening. It’s not that important that we all get to see the park today.
October 25th, 2007 at 8:48 am
I am so very sorry to hear of the loss of the Clapper Rail and the Kiang. This is heartbreaking news. Yet, I know it could have been so much worse. Let’s hope these fires end soon and no more loss of animals or facilities happens. Stay safe and take good care of everyone.
October 25th, 2007 at 8:55 am
No wonder the SDZ and WAP is a world class zoo and it is run by world class people. With all you had to worry about you took the time to keep us informed about our beloved animals and the people involved in their care. You truly are world class people. Things seem to be looking a little better every day and our prayers have been answered. Every life is precious, human or animal and we grieve the loss of these two lives, but thank God we can celebrate the the lives of the others. Thank you for all you do to protect and care for all creatures large or small.
October 25th, 2007 at 11:41 am
I haven’t seen any elephant’s on the elephant cam since Sunday!!! I hope the elephant’s are doing well and I hope you fix the elephant cam very soon!! Since I can’t go to the wild animal park at this time I would love to check on them on the elephant cam!!! Also, continue to bring us current updates and pictures!! Thank you and god bless to all the animals and employees
October 25th, 2007 at 12:32 pm
I have been reading all the entries on the fire updates on your website for the last 2 days. To echo what many others have said, Thank You, for taking the time to let the public know what has happened even though you all have been working so hard at keeping the WAP and all its inhabitants safe. I live in Michigan and visited your park a year ago for the first time. It is amazing, and the zoo is amazing too. When we heard about the fires we immediately thought of the Park and Zoo and wondered if they were in harm’s way.
Thank you for posting the link to ‘Read a blog about the Park’s fire’, it goes into a lot of detail that many of us were wondering about. The staff must truly be unselfish, dedicated people, I consider them to be heros…. They ARE heros, no doubt about it.
Thank you also for posting the link so that we may make donations online, could not be easier, I know I will be donating along with many others I am sure, because of what has happened.
I have been praying for the animals, the staff, firefighters, and all the families. I know many others have been praying also, and we continue to do so. All this collective thought I hope is helping.
I am sorry you have lost 2 lives, my sympathy to everyone.
I am worried about possible after effects of the fire… is there a chance that the animals and humans may still be in danger because of all the smoke and debris that was and is airborne?
Thank you again for all you have done and all you do.
You will continue to be in my prayers, keep everyone safe and well.
Blessed Be

Thank you all so much for all the hard work and dedication given to the Wild Animal Park and their residents. We went to the Park for many years when we lived in the Imperial Valley, since we’ve moved to Tucson we don’t have the opportunity to go as often but we keep our Zoo membership cards current and go as often as possible. It’s a wonderful place to visit and the residents (animals) there are extremely well cared for as well as loved. When we heard about the fires in San Diego County we were worried sick about the human residents as well as the animals and were finally able to breathe a sigh of relief when we heard the danger was over in your area. It sounds as though many eyes were on the beloved animals in the Park and watching over them. Thank you so much, everyone, for watching over this amazing facility and praying for the safety of all there; we love you all and pray daily for your safety.
October 25th, 2007 at 5:52 pm
I read that 9 employees have lost their homes - my heart goes out to them. I can’t imagine losing everything to a disaster. And now I hear that some of these fires were caused by arson. Jail is not good enough for anyone that does that.
I spent about 15 minutes in the vicinity of a house fire & when I left the area I had a terrible headache & had trouble breathing. I wonder what the after effects of all that smoke will have on humans & the animals. Thanks again for your heroes that worked so hard.
October 25th, 2007 at 6:07 pm
I was just watching the news earlier here in CT, and saw pictures of the San Diego Zoo and WildLife Park. There were pictures of the baby elephants and giraffes and several other animals, and some of the buildings which burned. They also mentioned the loss of the Clapper Rail and the Kiang. But on the other side, it was mentioned that there had been some births, I think it was 5 animals! It was good to finally see pictures of the animals I have been worrying about. It’s always been my dream to see the zoo and park, and horrible to think that everyone, both human and animal can be in such peril. Lets pray that things can finally be coming to an end, and be rebuilt.
October 25th, 2007 at 11:19 pm
Sorry to hear about the Kiang and the Clapper Rail Bird, my condolences. I know that the zoological society did an excellent job of evacuating and seeing to the welfare of all of the animals at the Wild Animal Park. It’s a great place to bring family and friends as well as out-of-town guests, and some who’ve never even been there before. I encourage everyone to support the San Diego Wild Animal Park AND The San Diego Zoo. There’s nowhere on Earth like them!
October 26th, 2007 at 7:54 am
I was so sorry to read about both your employees who lost their homes and of the clapper rail and the kiang that did not make it through the fire, my condolences. Thank you to all of you who, despite this trying time, made an effort to keep us informed. I am relieved that you and the animals seems to be safe again. Sitting in a very wet Austria I wish I could send some of the current rain to you! Please take care, you are all in my thoughts!

Hi! Thanks for the info on the clapper rail video. Just watched it, and now I know what they look like! Beautiful birds! I just hope that those rails that were released over the last year were able to survive this fire! Losing one rail at the park is one too many when these birds are still on the endangered list. It looks like that you have a very successful breeding and releasing program going on, and I hope that more rails will be released in the future. Good luck in this effort, and please stay safe and well. Hope the smokey air don’t bother you all and the animals too much!

Moderator’s note: Fortunately, clapper rails live in saltwater marshes that don’t burn very easily. The areas where the rails were released were not touched by the fires. Good news!

My 10 yr old daughter Zoe and I enjoyed an incredible Photo Safari Caravan tour (with Kat as tour guide) at the WAP in August and fed Ivan the 18-foot giraffe. We hope he’s ok too, in addition to all the other animals at the park. Keep up the great work!

Thanks so much for posting this. I visit the park every year and was worried when I saw that the park was under the evacuation zone and was closed. I hope the employees and animals continue to stay safe, and I’m so sorry about the lost animals and all the lost homes…

My condolences for the loss of the two animals, and my deepest thanks and gratitude for a phenominal job in protecting the animals in the park. I was also saddened to here that employees have lost there homes. In addition to being able to help the park, is there somewhere that help can be sent for those employees that will go directly to them to re-build there homes? They are true heros and I am sure many people would be willing to help.
Thanks Tania

I am so relieved to see that almost all the animals are okay. I worked at the park from 2003 for 2 years and at the Back Gate and we held up pretty well during the 2003 fire. However, this one came much closer. I am saddened to hear of the kiang and rail being lost. My heart goes out to the employees (many of whom I knew) that have lost their home.

Hi, Moderator! Got back on this comment page to see who else wrote in about the wildfires and WAP. Read your note on my statement about the clapper rails that were released and where you released them at. That is very good news that the wildfires didn’t get to those salt water marshes. I’m also very happy to know that salt water marshes are very hard to catch fire and burn. That’s super good news for the rails that are out there now! Did you all do an autopsy on the kiang and clapper rail to determine cause of death yet? I hope you did because I would like to know what caused them to pass away during that week. I’m sure that a huge amount of stress maybe a part of it, but I would like to know some more about what happened to them. Hope you all are handling this latest Santa Ana winds that are coming in this weekend. Hopefully, these winds will not kick up any existing fires or start new ones. You all have had enough to deal with in the first round of fires a couple of weeks ago. You and all the animals don’t need to go thru anymore of that kind of stress again. I read that these winds will be strong but not as strong as the first round. The Poomacha fire is the only one that is not totally contained yet; it’s only 85% contained right now. Firefighters expect to have that one totally contained by this weekend provided that the Santa Anas don’t kick it back up again. (YUK!!!) Praying for a fire free weekend for you all and the animals. Hope the air quality is soooooo much better now, too!

Gonna go and check in on Bai and baby girl! Oh yeah, I voted for a name for the panda cub!
Also, still praying for all of those employees that have lost their homes. Hope that they will get the assistance that they need to start rebuilding again.
Stay safe,

PS: No one has written about how the baby elephants did during that week of the fires. I did see all 3 of them on the elephant cam yesterday, and they look pretty good from what they and the adult elephants went thru. Khosi, Kamile, and Punga were all together in their little group, then they all followed one of the moms to another area. Maybe one of the elephant keepers can write us something about how the elephants tolerated that whole week. That will be an interesting blog to read! Luv yas!
