  27. Laura F. says:

I am glad to hear that the zoo and animals at the wild animal park are safe. Being on the East coast and hearing the fires are in San Diego, my first thought was how are the panda’s. Then are the animals in danger. Finally, our local news did report that the zoo was OK and that all of the animals were safe. I guess they must have had some calls. I know San Diego is more than the zoo and people are not safe from the fires in the area. My thoughts and prayers are with all of the residents in the area. Thanks for keeping the animals safe.

  28. Susan Riggio of NJ says:

We flew from NJ to San Diego ,with the kids ,just to visit the Wild Animal Park and the zoo and have wonderful memories! We are so relieved to hear that the animals in both locations have been placed in their safest sites during the horrible wild fires. 38. Marcia M from PA says:

Thank you for the updates! I have been frantically searching various sites since yesterday trying to find info on the Zoo. Of course I am concerned about all of the poor people in jeopardy of losing their homes, but I am also extremely concerned about all the precious animals at the Zoo and Wild Animal Park. Like so many others, my favorites are the pandas but I love all the animals there. I am hoping and praying that they will all be safe. My brother and his wife were in San Diego earlier this year and brought me back pictures of Bai Yun and Su Lin (and Kalluk) that I treasure. Although I am across the country, my heart is aching for all of those affected by these awful fires. Good luck and many blessings to all the dedicated workers there taking care of those animals. I hope all your homes are safe. (I can’t tell you how much your website means to those of us who can’t get there in person!)

  39. barbara says:

I am so glad to hear that preventive measures are in place for all of Balboa Park sites. You Californians are having a bad season and I hope the weather changes quickly and the Santa Anas blow away. Kudos to all who take care of people, animals, the natural world and the built environment.

I really appreciate the time and energy involved to post these updates to us the concerned public.
Just wanted to let you all know that our prayers are with you. My heart aches at this surreal situation.
Many blog and forum boards across the nation are proclaiming concern for the welfare of these animals. Know that when all is said and done, many new vollunteers and supporters will come of this. Thank you for easing our minds with your assurances of healthy animals. So many animals are not so lucky right now, and are feeling abandoned, frightened and unsafe.

  51. Julien and David says:

Thank you for sharing reassuring information about the animals at the park thanks to your updates on Internet. We used to go to the zoo and park all the time when we lived in California two years ago. These were wonderful moments we miss a lot now that we live in France. The news of the wildfires are making headlines here and we were very concerned about you all. We are so glad to hear you are safe.

  52. Grade 3B St. Ignatius School says:

We are keeping the whole San Diego area in our prayers, but especially the zoo’s staff and their families, and the animals (especially the baby Panda cub, who we have nicknamed PeeWee until she gets her real name). Thank you for your updates 21 3rd graders and their teacher were concerned.
    Miss Caine

  53. Becca - Columbia, MD says:

I visited the San Diego Zoo this past April and was then, on a “normal” day, taken with the care that is given to the animals that reside there. Reading about the precautions and contingency plans already in place for a horrible event like the fires you all are enduring out there makes me appreciate the Zoo even more. Keep up the great work! Our thoughts and prayers are with you - may the animals and all their human caretakers and neighbors in California remain unscathed.

  54. Donna Lenhart of NY says:

There is naturally a great deal of coverage about these fires but I’ve not seen or heard anything about the zoo. As an animal lover, I’ve been very fretful here on the opposite side of the country. Coming to the site, I didn’t think there would be any updates, as I thought everyone would be too busy attending to the animals’ safety and their own. It is so kind of you to think of all the concerned people out here who are too far to physically get out and help you but are so worried about the welfare of the animals and employees. Please keep yourselves and the animals as safe as you possibly can. We are thinking of you all and sending all good thoughts your way.

  55. Fran says:

God bless you all for caring for these beautiful animals. It is a great relief to read your update. Thank you so much for telling us what is happening there. Hoping for the news to get better and better very soon. From a New York State panda cam fan.

  56. Traci in Indy says:

I was checking the status of the wildfires on cnn.com and all of a sudden realized I didn’t know what was going on at the zoo. My heart skipped a beat as I raced to the zoo’s website to get an update. I was so relieved to see all the animals (and keepers) are safe. My thoughts are with the you, the keepers, as you continue to brave the wildfires to keep the animals safe. You are all heroes in my book. I know there are thousands of humans being affected by this tragedy but these animals are helpless and are depending on you for their safety. I applaud everything you are doing and wish I could be there to help you. I know after all this has passed the animals will repay you with the unconditional love only animals can give.

  57. Nancy H says:

So glad to finally get some news about our furry friends. Please keep us posted. I am so concerned about the Wild Animal Park and honor the workers who have stayed with the animals. They are true heroes!

  58. Holly says:

I live in Atlanta. I am watching the fires and praying for everyone’s safety. I have never been to your zoo, but I love all animals. Thank you for letting the world know that your animals continue to be in the best of hands.

  59. Isabel V. says:

As soon as I heard about the wildfires, I immediately worried about all the animals. I am very glad to hear they are ok and that they are in no immediate danger. I know that your staff will take all precautions necessary for the safety of all the animals. Thank you for having us updated. I pray for the saftey of every person and animal in this terrible situation.

  60. Debbie S. in CT says:

Thank you so much for all the updates concerning the animals and the zoo during this stressful time. I am a huge Panda fan, but love all of God’s creatures. They give us humans so much delight. I’m praying to St. Francis of Assissi, who is the patron saint to animals, and I’m sure he’ll protect all the animals at the zoo and the wildlife park. My prayers are with the humans and animals, they everyone will be safe and that this terrible situation will be over. My God watch over everyone in California and protect them.

I searched in vain the last couple of days regarding what was happening at the San Diego Zoo. I realize this is horrible for everyone involved, but this zoo is one of a kind and I can’t believe no one is telling us the story. I finally just typed in “San Diego Zoo” and got your update.

Thank you so much! We all know there are thousands of wild animals dying in the fires. It is heartbreaking. But we must keep the zoo animals safe. Are there contingency plans should things get totally out of control? Are the elephants safe?

God bless all of you who are working to take care of the animals. And thanks again for your update on the situation.

    Gracie

  68. Sally/AZ says:

Thank you for taking the time to post information on the animals. My heart and prayers are with you, your families and the animals that look to you for care.

  69. sukie says:

Oh, I am so happy that the animals are all right. I have been watching the panda cam since Su Lin was born and I was so worried. Now, Mei Sheng, Gao Gao, Su Lin, the new cubbie, and of course, Bai Yun are a part of my life. I would be devastated if they came to harm (or any of the SDZ animals).

I know that it must be difficult to care for your animal friends and for your families at the same time in this time of peril. But I want to take the time to thank all the workers, doctors, and any one connected with the zoo for their dedication to their charges. Thanks, Sukie

  70. Sarah of NB Canada says:

THANKS so much for posting this information! I was just at your zoo and wild life park a few weeks ago and I fell in love with them. I would hate to think that something serious was to happen to the beautiful zoo and it’s sister park. My thoughts are with the staff and animals as the fires rage around you. I hope you are all safe in this time.

  74. Dr. Eustaquio Escondido says:

Yes indeed, though I myself have witnessed the large wildfires here in the San Pasqual Valley, I know beyond any shadow of a doubt that all of the animals at the San Diego Wild Animal Park are quite comfy and well cared for. The Wild Animal Park is a one-of-a-kind treasure for all who visit and support it, as a great portion of my years has been spent there. The measures that the Zoological Society Of San Diego have prepared to provide a legacy for generations to come is greatly appreciated by my family and I as well!

The wild fires in CA is a big news in Japan. We are worried about the zoo. We pray the fires will go out A.S.A.P. Thank you.

  78. Marie says:

Gracie #67 - I too have listened to all of the news stations, hoping they would let us know what was happening at the Zoo. The first thing I have done when I get up in the morning is to put on the news. There is just so much bad news that I guess they can’t list all the problems. I did see a large number of beautiful horses being driven up a hill. They were trying to get them out of the fire zone.

I just want everyone at the zoo to know how much I/we appreciate your care of the animals. Is there a plan in place, just in case the fires can’t be stopped? (now or in the future)

Keep up the good work. We are praying for all of you, both Human and Animal.

  79. Bobbie in 'Bama says:

Part of my everyday routine is to first ck the Panda cub and then the adorable baby elephant. As the news of the fires increased, I just kept hearing “California”…then all of the sudden I started hearing more about San Diego. I think its great that so much information is provided regarding the Wild Animal Park and Zoo, as well as all of the information regarding the animals and their well being. We appreciate all that you do to protect these amazing animals! You are truly amazing!

Are there any opportunities to help the Wild Animal Park if offering donations is not feasible??? I know that is probably unlikely, but it is worth asking if there are those opportunities. :)

    Thank you so much!!!

    Cassie

  85. Leanne says:

I grew up on the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park. I am glad to hear that the animals and staff are safe. I hope you do not get much damage to the parks.

  88. Mary Lou says:

I appreciate the the San Diego Zoological Society’s efforts to keep us informed of how the fires have affected the Zoo and Wild Animal Park. Thank you for taking the time to do this. I know your staff does a wonderful job in caring for all of your animals, especially in difficult situations like this.
I was, however, wondering if anyone has news about the numerous other wildlife facilities located in southern California, or how we can be of help to them? Besides zoos, many rehab, wildlife education, and studio animal facilities are located in the regions where the fires are located. I am anxious to hear any updates.

  89. Jenn from Maine says:

Thank you for taking excellent care of the animals during this difficult and stressful time. My thoughts are with the zoo staff, their families, the residents of the affected areas, and all the wonderful animals at the San Diego zoo.

  91. Paula from Detroit says:

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the animal welfare updates. I used to live in San Diego and both the zoo and wild animal park still hold a huge special place in my heart. My ignorant local news stated that animals were being euthanized as they could not be moved and I have been frantically looking for something that states otherwise and am so happy to hear that they were wrong that I’m just sitting here crying my eyes out.
Thanks for all you do and for keeping us updated.

  92. Maja says:

I am glad to see you are taking care of animals, and they are safe. I have watched polar web cam up t o now, and noticed that one of the bears isn`t moving, hope he is not affected by the smoke.
Glad to have seen one ape, jumping about.Thanx for cariing for those animals.

  93. Maja says:

O.K. I have just have seen that polar bear move, he got me scared for a moment, I really like to watch them usually.

  94. J. McDermott says:

Just came back from visiting the Cleveland Zoo, which brought your situation back to my mind. Agree with all of the other comments expressing relief that the animals have been well cared. Sounds as if you did better planning against fires than others. We are supposed to attend a convention there next week & are wondering if they will go through with it. If so, I would look into visiting you again. However, sounds as if the area is having enough problems without visitors taxing your resources. Have only sited the Animal Park once, but the Zoo many times. Love your signs (have 2 or 3 scattered around here).

Thinking of you all & what you’re going through….hope not too many lost their homes.

News coverage of the fires is extensive, however, we have not heard anything about your wonderful Zoo and Park. This website is excellent, and is most assuring to those of us outside of California who love these animals. Thank you, and pray all continue to be unharmed.

Animal lovers unite! So glad the zoo is in good hands.

In one of the updates, it says that you lost a clapper rail and a kiang because of complications with the fire. Does it mean that they died?

Moderator’s note: Sadly, yes. But we are so grateful that the rest of the animals seem to be fine.

Very sorry to read that some employee’s lost homes and the loss of the clapper rail and kiang. I love checking up on the new panda cub everyday and watching mom and baby romp around the enclosure. THANK YOU…not only the best care of the animals but the employee’s too. For all of us animal lovers out here, were extremely grateful…
