Education: Free and Low-cost Resources for Studying Wildlife and Conservation
The San Diego Zoo and the Wild Animal Park want to be your partners in conservation education. On this site we have put together some of the resources you can use in your classroom, at your school site, and for research about animals. Click around to the links that meet your needs.
- Looking
for animal facts, photos, video, and sound?
Animal Bytes
also includes descriptions of animal classifications,
habitats and ecosystems, and where animals are
found geographically. Your students can use this
information to support their reading, writing,
and science skills while learning more about the
process of research. For fun personal information
about many of our animal residents students can
visit Kid Territory.
- Are
your students wondering about careers in zoos
or working with animals? They can read about
a wide variety of Zoo careers in Job
Profiles.
-
Free admission to the Zoo and Wild Animal Park
for San Diego County schools. Low-cost admission
is available for schools outside of San Diego
county. Self-guided
visit materials and guided
tours are available to help you make the most
of your visit to the Zoo or Wild Animal Park.
- Take
your students around the world. Your students
can learn about conservation field work, read recent conservation news, and find tips that they can do themselves to help animals and habitats in Helping Wildlife. Older students can learn about the
research and field work being done by the San Diego Zoo's Institute for Conservation Research.
- Free
assemblies are available to schools that qualify.
The Zoo and Wild Animal Park offer outreach programs
that bring animals to your school. Check the Assembly
page to see what topic will interest your students,
then contact Zoo or Park Education to see if your
district qualifies.
- Can't
come to us? The Classroom
Kit will help you bring hands-on lessons and
activities to your students. The kits are available
for different grade levels and can be borrowed
from the Zoo for a two-week period for only $5.
And we offer more ideas on our Curriculum, Activities, and Materials page.
- Download
some GREAT curriculum materials for FREE. Go
to the Curriculum, Activities, and Materials page to get copies
of a variety of curriculum units. For entertaining science projects and observations, visit our Science Projects page.
- Enjoy a low-cost, unforgettable evening of VIP treatment for teachers. Our annual Fall Educator Events are full of great ideas and are a lot of fun, too! Click here for details.
