The consequences of overfishing

As Africa’s forests experience the empty forest syndrome, due to depletion of wildlife, so do the world’s oceans experience a similar emptiness due to overfishing. The bushmeat crisis

The Zoological Society of San Diego recognizes that the worldwide decimation of wildlife has reached a crisis level that threatens an ever-increasing number of species with extinction because of human activities. The widespread consumption of wildlife for the commercial bushmeat trade in Africa is causing the loss of ecologically important species including apes, monkeys, elephants, and antelopes at an alarming rate. This is an environmental catastrophe for which immediate action must be taken. The causes and consequences of this critical situation are complex, and the solutions must be multi-faceted. Therefore, the Zoological Society commits cooperation and resources to local, national, and international efforts to stop the illegal commercial African bushmeat market, and to reduce the legal consumption to sustainable levels.
