With a little help from Summer Camp at the San Diego Zoo, the two words you won't hear from your youngsters this summer are "I'm bored." Students entering grades K–7 in the fall can take cool five-day programs for each grade level.

Every day includes a variety of crafts, games, animal presentations, and privileged visits to off-exhibit areas. The famous Dr. Zoolittle, along with other entertainers, will do midday shows that are sure to be a hit with campers of every age.

Five-day program (9 a.m.–3 p.m.):

Meet the Beasts
Campers will be busy meeting all kinds of beasts: mammals, birds, and reptiles. Visiting camels up close and feeding apples to the giant tortoises make this program a real winner.

 

ABCs of Animals
Who ever knew that the ABC's could be such fun! Campers will be introduced to animals from the Zoo's amazing alphabet of critters. It could be a specially programmed animal feeding or a ride on the Zoo's miniature train. Anyway you look at it, the program is packed with fun.

 

Entering 1st Grade

A close look at mammals

Mad about Mammals
Campers are sure to be mad in love with mammals and camp after a week full of amazing adventures. Exploring spotted cats from the jungle and special encounters with prairie dogs that "dig" life underground are just a few of the week's highlights.


Furry Friends
Friends are always great to have, and this camp is all about making friends on the furry side. Tigers, bus rides, and adventures with hippos will leave lasting impressions upon our first-grade campers!

 

Entering 2nd Grade

Compare animals that fly with animals on land

Things with Wings
Birds have wings but so do some other animals! This class will have a blast comparing and contrasting things with wings and creatures that prefer the ground. That means that there are tons of different kinds of animals the second-grade campers will be up close and personal with, from flying monkeys to majestic birds that soar in the sky.


Friends that Fly
Look up and you're sure to find a friend! Campers will get a chance to compare friends that fly with friends who are ground-bound. Animals of every kind with make this class fun and exciting. From Matilda the laughing kookaburra to her tree-mate, the koala, this class is a winner.

 

Entering 3rd Grade

Study cool animals with bad reputations

Wildlife Weirdos
Being on the strange side of wildlife actually makes you extra cool! Campers can count on having some cool FUN in this class! Treks into the Reptile House will surely be a lifetime memory for our campers. Bug catching and special dinners being served to snakes will leave lasting impressions.


Animal Outlaws
Sometimes the reptiles, amphibians, and insects are judged unfairly. This class will help to set the facts straight. Animal outlaws are NOT outlaws at all. After our lizard feedings and giant snake encounters with keepers, campers are sure to find a soft spot in their hearts for these misunderstood creatures.

How adaptations help animals survive

Animal Body Builders
Tongues that grasp, noses with amazing suction power, insects with horns, and much more will be explored in this fun camp dedicated to a closer look at adaptations. Lots of keeper interactions and treks into off-exhibit areas make this camp a winner.


Parts for Stayin' Alive
Creature features so unbelievable that they seem to be from another world are the target study for this camp. Feet that work better than snowshoes, nose- to-nose encounters with omnivorous bears, and an visit with an insect so amazing that it has the ability to stay alive up to three days after losing a head! Learn about adaptations so incredible that you'll have to tell your friends about them.

Backstage at the Zoo
Backstage is where these fifth-grade campers are headed. They'll be exploring the Zoo from the backside of things. We'll look at everything from the most dangerous Zoo jobs to the most glamorous.


It's a Zoo in Here
It's an amazing city at the San Diego Zoo and we're inviting fifth-grade students to an insider's look at it. From keepers to trainers, we're going to cover most of the 120 acres and discover which career has the most thrills.

How animals make a home and a living

The Weird Ways of Wildlife
Some animal behaviors look pretty weird, but at a closer look we learn that they're connected to survival. Students will get to know our gorilla troop with special roof-top viewing, and we'll ride the Skyfari over for a closer look at the behavior of the polar bears. Don't miss this totally cool class!


Home Sweet Habitat
Campers get ready to explore animal habitats. We'll lure some animals out into the open by feeding them. We'll talk to keepers and look behind-the-scenes at our man-made habitats. We'll ride the Skyfari across the Zoo to explore life on the tundra. Anyway you look at it, this class is so SWEET that you'll never want it to end.
