Calendar: Garden Celebration

A Garden of the Senses
at the San Diego Zoo

May 17 and 18, 2008

This year's annual Garden Celebration focuses on how the five senses are stimulated by gardens and plants. Called “Garden of Senses,” we will highlight the interaction of plants on senses like taste, touch, hearing, sight, and smell.

Sensory examples will include beautiful foliage and flowers to see, tasty food and beverages, fragrant blossoms to delight the sense of smell, the sound of breezes rustling through trees and bamboo, and the feel of bark and foliage on the skin. Each display offers unique sensations in the Zoo’s garden setting.

Free botanical bus tours, offered at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., will highlight the sensory play of plants throughout the Zoo. There will also be self-guided walking tours showcasing the magnificence of these plants. Dr. Zoolittle will be back with a show in Wegeforth Bowl featuring his zany antics and showing people how plants can bring them to their senses. Display booths will be set up with samples showcasing how plants can interact with each of the five senses.

Reservations are recommended for the botanical bus tours. Call (619) 231-1515, ext. 4298.
